How to Grow Corn in Your Backyard
Now that summer is here, I’m sure you’re eager to know how to grow corn in your backyard. After all, that’s where most home gardening starts. While I am not an expert, nor am I a farmer, I have successfully taken part and grown several varieties of corn at home and have been able to share with others the techniques I use to successfully grow corn in their own backyard garden. My favorite is extra sweet corn, nothing really compares to the taste. At least for myself.
When I was growing my first home garden, I wasn’t overly concerned with knowing how to grow corn. My first concern was about how to water my garden. However, once I was able to determine what sort of soil and fertilizer I needed, it was very easy to plant corn and water it correctly. After I planted my first corn crop, I began to realize how much I really liked growing corn. It’s neat watching the sprouts and stalks grow during the summer months. Especially, when they get thicker and taller.
Growing corn at home is pretty easy once you know a few basic things. Corn needs a lot of sunlight, so I started by planting my corn crop directly on the outside edge of my garden space. If you do not have space for a garden you can get a small window box in the corner of your yard, then you can grow corn there, but that may take more care and attention.
One thing to remember about growing corn in the yard is that during the cold and hot days, the only time I would be able to harvest my corn was late summer early fall, when the temperatures outside were a little cooler. The late afternoon hours in the fall were usually the best times to harvest corn. You don’t want to wait until after the fall, as this could hurt your crops, making them much less tasty. Of course, a lot of it will depend on your climate region.
If you grow your corn during the warm days, then you will need to water it regularly. This will help make sure your corn does not dry out too quickly, and it will ensure that your corn does not spoil. This is especially important if you plant corn during different times of the year. The fall season is one of the most difficult times to grow corn due to the fact that the weather gets colder all throughout the country during this time.
Learning how to grow corn in the backyard is actually quite easy once you begin to understand the basic gardening techniques. In order to grow corn at home, you need to do all of the work yourself. It is a very rewarding experience once you see how simple growing corn can be!
